This client is a respected local accounting firm that provides tax preparation, payroll, and financial consulting services to small and medium-sized businesses. Their reputation is built on accuracy, confidentiality, and client trust. As their client base expanded, so did their reliance on cloud technology and email-based collaboration, making cybersecurity essential for protecting sensitive financial and personal information.
Employee credentials secured after exposure on the dark web.
Data recovery was achieved through the use of immutable backups.
Reduction in phishing attempts through AI-powered email filtering.
Response time reduced to under 10 minutes with 24/7 monitoring.
The Challenge
In November 2024, CybrogenIT conducted a cybersecurity assessment for a boutique accounting firm with 22 employees. The firm handled sensitive financial data for more than 300 business clients and individuals, relying heavily on cloud-based accounting software and email for client communication.
Our scan revealed that the firm had suffered a data breach in late October 2024. Attackers had infiltrated their system through a malicious email attachment disguised as a tax document. This resulted in seven compromised credentials, three infected devices, and the exposure of confidential client files containing tax IDs and bank information.
We also found five dark web listings containing stolen login details and documents from prior years. Additionally, attackers registered two look-alike domains to impersonate the firm and send fake invoices to clients. A confirmed ransomware infection encrypted local backups, putting operations and client trust at immediate risk.
What We Did
CybrogenIT executed a structured recovery and protection plan focused on containment, restoration, and prevention.
Incident Containment & Cleanup
Quarantined infected devices and wiped all ransomware traces.
Disabled all exposed accounts and implemented forced password resets.
Shut down spoofed domains and blocked malicious IPs.
Data Recovery & Backup Hardening
Restored encrypted files using immutable cloud backups.
Implemented automated daily backup snapshots with version control.
Encrypted all stored client data and enabled strict access permissions.
Credential & Email Security
Introduced organization-wide MFA on all accounts.
Deployed advanced email protection with AI-based phishing detection.
Configured DMARC, SPF, and DKIM policies to block domain spoofing.
Vulnerability Management & Monitoring
Patched outdated applications and closed open ports.
Deployed SIEM with 24/7 SOC monitoring for real-time threat detection.
Added DNS filtering and EDR solutions to all endpoints.
Client Communication & Legal Response
Assisted leadership with client breach notifications and compliance reporting.
Provided forensic documentation for legal and insurance claims.
Implemented an internal breach response playbook to prevent recurrence.
The Results
- 7 compromised credentials secured
- 3 infected devices restored
- 2 spoofed domains removed
- 100% data recovery achieved
- Phishing incidents dropped by 85%
- Response time to new threats reduced to under 10 minutes.
Key Takeaway
This case shows how fast a financial services company can face serious consequences from a single phishing email. Sensitive client data was exposed, backups were encrypted, and reputation was at stake. CybrogenIT’s rapid intervention contained the threat, restored data integrity, and established long-term defenses that now protect every client record and endpoint in real time.
