The Challenge
In October 2024, CybrogenIT conducted a risk assessment for a precision manufacturing company with 28 employees, following the onset of production system slowdowns and increased network instability. The company relied on connected machinery, cloud-based inventory tracking, and vendor portals to manage its daily operations.
Our scan revealed nine findings on the dark web, six compromised employee credentials, and three infected machines used in their production network. Attackers had gained access through a phishing email disguised as a purchase order from a known supplier. Once inside, they deployed malware that collected login credentials, disrupted scheduling software, and initiated unauthorized data transfers.
Further investigation uncovered five open ports, four unpatched vulnerabilities (CVEs), and a SQL injection flaw in a web-based vendor portal. Attackers also created two look-alike domains to impersonate the company in phishing attempts targeting its supply chain partners. Sensitive production data and supplier contracts were confirmed to have been exfiltrated, putting the business at risk of downtime and financial loss.
What We Did
CybrogenIT deployed a comprehensive recovery and prevention strategy focused on securing production systems, restoring operations, and protecting supplier relationships.
Incident Response & Containment
Quarantined infected devices and isolated the production network from the corporate environment.
Revoked all exposed credentials and enforced firm-wide password resets.
Removed malware, stealer logs, and backdoors linked to the phishing breach.
Network & System Hardening
Closed five exposed ports and patched four unaddressed vulnerabilities (CVEs).
Corrected the SQL injection flaw in the vendor portal and reconfigured access control lists.
Deployed advanced firewall rules, intrusion detection, and DNS filtering to block malicious traffic.
Credential & Identity Protection
Implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all employee and admin accounts.
Integrated dark web monitoring for ongoing credential exposure detection.
Enforced least-privilege access to restrict sensitive system permissions.
Email & Supply Chain Security
Added AI-based phishing filters and domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
Neutralized two spoofed domains impersonating the company.
Deployed vendor security verification for all external partners.
Data Recovery & Compliance
Restored affected systems using clean, immutable cloud backups.
Conducted data integrity verification across all production files and databases.
Created an internal incident response playbook tailored to manufacturing environments.
The Results
- 6 compromised accounts secured
- 3 infected systems restored
- 9 dark web exposures neutralized
- SQL injection flaw resolved
- 90% reduction in phishing attempts
- Zero downtime
Within 75 days of engagement, CybrogenIT restored production systems, eliminated threats, and reinforced the company’s cyber defenses. The company successfully rebuilt operational stability, avoided production delays, and regained vendor confidence through transparent remediation and stronger cybersecurity governance.
Key Takeaway
Manufacturing companies face increasing risks as their production systems become more interconnected and data-driven. A single phishing email compromised multiple systems, exposed vendor data, and disrupted production scheduling. With CybrogenIT’s immediate response and strategic hardening measures, the company transitioned from being a soft target to a model of operational resilience and cyber readiness.
