The Challenge

In December 2024, CybrogenIT was contacted by a regional construction supplier after their accounting team noticed unusual login activity and delayed purchase orders. The company, with 25 employees and multiple vendor accounts, supplies materials to contractors and builders across the state.

A cybersecurity scan revealed seven compromised credentials, three infected workstations, and eight dark web listings tied to active employee logins. Attackers had obtained credentials through a phishing email that appeared to come from a long-time vendor. Once inside, they accessed accounting records, altered payment details, and sent fake invoices to customers.

Further analysis found five open ports, three unpatched vulnerabilities (CVEs), and two look-alike domains created to impersonate the company’s order portal. Sensitive customer data, including invoices and bank routing information, had been exposed. Ransomware traces were also detected on two devices, indicating that attackers were preparing for a larger attack.

What We Did

CybrogenIT initiated an immediate containment and remediation plan to secure the environment, recover data, and restore customer trust.

  • Incident Response & Containment

    • Disconnected infected devices and stopped ransomware execution before encryption occurred.

    • Revoked all compromised credentials and enforced immediate password resets.

    • Blocked spoofed vendor emails and quarantined malicious attachments.

  • Network & Endpoint Security

    • Closed five exposed ports and patched all unaddressed vulnerabilities.

    • Deployed next-gen antivirus and Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) across all devices.

    • Implemented DNS filtering and firewall rules to block known threat domains.

  • Email & Domain Protection

    • Configured SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records to prevent future email spoofing.

    • Neutralized two look-alike domains impersonating the supplier’s order portal.

    • Deployed phishing detection and AI-based scanning on all email accounts.

  • Credential & Data Security

    • Enforced multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all employee and vendor portals.

    • Integrated dark web monitoring to identify any new credential leaks in real time.

    • Migrated accounting and payment systems to secure cloud platforms with encryption and access logs.

  • Training & Long-Term Protection

    • Conducted company-wide phishing awareness training.

    • Deployed 24/7 SOC and SIEM monitoring for proactive detection.

    • Created an internal incident response plan and vendor verification process.

The Results

Key Takeaway

Construction suppliers often operate in fast-paced environments with multiple vendors, invoices, and payment systems, making them prime targets for phishing and other types of fraud. In this case, attackers exploited credential reuse and weak email security to infiltrate the company’s operations. CybrogenIT’s quick response eliminated active threats, stopped financial fraud, and established strong, scalable cybersecurity controls that now protect every endpoint and transaction.

Technology Used

CybrogenIT implemented a multi-layered cybersecurity framework that included:

  • Endpoint Protection & EDR: SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender for Business

  • SOC & SIEM: Azure Sentinel with 24/7 monitoring and automated alerts

  • Email Security: Proofpoint Essentials and Microsoft 365 Defender

  • Identity Management: Azure AD Conditional Access with MFA

  • Network Security: Firewall tuning, DNS filtering, and intrusion prevention

  • Backup & Recovery: Immutable cloud backups with ransomware rollback

  • Threat Intelligence: Dark web monitoring, spoofed domain tracking, CVE patch management
