The Challenge

In January 2025, CybrogenIT conducted a BizGuard Risk Assessment for a regional pest control company with 30+ employees. The assessment uncovered serious gaps in cybersecurity and confirmed that the business had already suffered a breach. Employee credentials from both 2024 and 2025 were found live on the dark web, malware was present on company devices, and a ransomware leak had already exposed sensitive information.

The company’s website lacked even the most basic protections, leaving it open to hijacking, data leakage, and phishing attacks. In addition, 25 public-facing URLs tied to internal systems were actively exposed, creating multiple entry points for attackers. Despite this, their in-house IT provider had not taken corrective action. With high ransomware risk, ongoing infections, and leaked credentials, the company’s operations, reputation, and customer data were in immediate danger.

What We Did

CybrogenIT stepped in to contain active threats and deploy long-term defenses. Our response included:

  • Incident Containment & Cleanup

    • Quarantined and reimaged two infected endpoints.

    • Revoked compromised credentials and enforced password resets across all accounts.

    • Contained the confirmed ransomware leak and blocked further exfiltration attempts.

  • Dark Web & Credential Protection

    • Monitored for exposed credentials and implemented automated alerts.

    • Integrated password policy enforcement with mandatory MFA for all employees.

  • Website & Perimeter Security

    • Hardened website security by implementing Content Security Policy (CSP), Transport Layer Security (HSTS), and X-Frame Options headers.

    • Corrected cookie vulnerabilities (HttpOnly and Secure flags).

    • Closed 4 exposed ports that could be used for unauthorized access.

  • Endpoint & Network Security

    • Deployed next-gen Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) to all workstations.

    • Added DNS filtering and firewalls with intrusion detection.

    • Rolled out patch management to address vulnerabilities like Spectre.

  • Monitoring & Reporting

    • Set up 24/7 SOC monitoring and centralized log collection.

    • Automated compliance and risk reporting to keep leadership informed.
